Wheat Test
Variety Evaluations conducts a wheat and oat trial annually at the Black Belt Experiment Station. The trials are also conducted on other MAFES Branch Stations as well as on farm sites across Mississippi. The trials are made up of wheat and oat entries from both commercial seed companies and public universities. The number of entries vary from year to year but on the average around 60 entries of wheat and 8 oat entries make up the trial. The plots are “farmed” with normal agronomic practices and after harvest yields are calculated to determine which varieties are best adapted for the local area and the state as a whole. This information is then published and distributed to producers and industry participants.
